Poppy Lane Skin Care & Lymphoedema Clinic

Introduction
Lymphoedema information resources.

The swelling of Lymphoedema and lipoedema often quietly affects people before they realise there is a problem. The degree of lymphoedema severity will vary from person to person, yet the underlying problem of deficient lymphatic function  causing lymphoedema is always the same.

Lymphoedema is a relatively simple condition to treat. It is caused by a localised blockage in the lymphatic system.

The lymphatic system removes excess protein and other waste products from the body tissue fluids. A localised lymphatic system blockage causes protein and wastes to be trapped in a lymphoedema affected limb. Once this occurs you develop the  swelling of lymphoedema.

If you are finding it difficult to stay motivated with lymphoedema due to increased size and lesser mobility, then the resource information and explanations here will help solve your problem.

This information can help put you in control and on top of things. From this point on, you can begin to get to do the things you would like to, and not be continually missing out on life.

The swelling of lymphoedema / lymphedema will quickly reduce once lymphatic transport is improved and returned. Treatment is this simple.

You can actively assist your body to increase the existing lymphatic function with diet. This will help reduce swelling. Massage can bypass a localised blockage of the lymphatic system causing lymphoedema swelling.

To effect treatment we can assist you by providing straightforward information and  reference materials of what to do. All all you need add is;

  • a desire to reduce your lymphoedema,

  • the will to act on the information.

Then you will be well on the way to lymphoedema control.

The information links below introduce a sequential co-ordinated self help guide to explain the easy steps for lymphoedema and lipoedema control. They are the keys to your success.

A fast overview to lymphoedema.
The swelling of Lymphoedema often quietly affects people before they realise there is a problem.

Lymphoedema; The common denominator.
Lymphoedema swelling is caused when localised plasma proteins, leaked from the arterial blood circulation capillaries, remain trapped in the fluid, located in the spaces between the cells of the tissues in your body, long term, and due to irreversible dysfunctional lymphatic drainage and consequential macrophage overload.

The lymphatic system (as a primary method), and phagocytosis by macrophages (a secondary method), are the only two natural methods of protein removal of the fluids located in the spaces between the cells of the tissues of your body. All lymphoedemas have this common problem causing the swelling of lymphoedema, regardless of the lymphatic dysfunction trigger.

Why do trapped proteins in the tissues cause such a problem?
The problem with proteins can be likened to a magnet and it's magnetic field
. Just as a magnet will draw iron filings around itself within its magnetic field, similarly (plasma) proteins will draw body fluids to themselves, not by a magnetic field, but by the action of osmosis.

Too greater a concentration of proteins (than that of approximately 2% of extracellular body fluids in the body tissues) in any one area will thus cause too much fluid retention and consequential oedema, or lymphoedma, if  the entrapment of excess protein is permanent.

Therefore is could be said Lymphoedema is directly caused by: 'the (plasma) protein deposit into the interstitial fluids of the body tissues from arterial blood capillary vessels, being greater than protein transport out of interstitial fluids of the body tissues, due to lymphatic dysfunction and cessation of macrophage activity in an affected area over a prolonged period of time'.

It is only by returning proteins back to a ratio of 2% in interstitial tissue fluids will the oedema in Lymphoedema be controlled. This is the real and main objective for all Lymphoedema control procedures. This website is here to assist you achieve this objective.

Lymphoedema  (from Latin Lympha- meaning ‘pure water’ + the Greek -oidein meaning  to ‘swell’) or swelling of a part of the body due to abnormal fluid collection in the spaces between the cells. Lymphoedema is the leading cause of disability in people with lymphatic dysfunction. Substantive medical reports and statistical information about the prevalence and risk factors note after a 15 year lapse from time of surgery or radiation therapy the incidence of contracting lymphoedema can be up to 45%. This website is designed to promote awareness of Lymphoedema and features a wide array of information and resources. You can access information to promote and increase your awareness to reduce risk. We provide relevant updated resources in combination with other wide ranging information to provide, share and offer guidance for treatment. We always advise you work in conjunction with your own medical practitioner. The information presented is for information and evaluation purposes, it is not a substitute for proper medical care in the treatment of lymphoedema. Self help treatment information is available at this website. Lymphoedema is a developing long term and chronic illness that requires currently relevant information that is informative, frequently updated and is from a reputable source. This type of service is provided here. By obtaining the right information patients, doctors, therapists and physiotherapists may make informative and informed decisions of the best and most effective treatment possible for each patient on a one to one basis. Correct diagnosis and information must be available and is imperative to make the right and proper treatment decisions to achieve the best medical outcome. Aetiology, history and physical examination. There are different forms of lymphoedema; each has a different cause or trigger. History and physical examination will provide clues for diagnosis. The most common form of lymphoedema, Secondary lymphedema (in Western society) is a result of trauma, surgical intervention, lymph node removal and/or radiation therapy. If lymphoedema is not treated it will slowly worsen and  cause deterioration of skin and body tissue. Symptoms and functional changes associated with, or resulting from lymphoedema pathophysiology. Emerging Patho-physiological evidence suggests that if lymph node removal is limited to the minimum, which is a choice made possible by the results of centennial node biopsy evaluation, then the development or possibility of secondary lymphoedema may be reduced. Other contributing factors assisting the reduction or development of related oedema is by application of conservative and more localised targeted radiation therapy after surgical interventions, especially for cancer related treatment. Other lymphoedema forms are Primary lymphoedema caused from insufficient lymphatic function or capacity of the lymphatic system in the body. Primary lymphoedema may be sub categorised as; Milroy’s (or Nonne-Milroy) which is familial (i.e. genetically caused). Connatal; which is present at birth; Meige’s Disease, which is similar to connatal, appears at later stages of life but before puberty. Lymphoedema praecox appears or starts in adolescence. Lymphoedema tarda; appears normally after the age of 35 and is almost identical to praecox. Many local support groups in many cases can provide pertinent information. Information here is intended to spread and relay information to patients, therapists and doctors. Many doctors and therapists also supply information pertinent to lymphoedema control. We encourage new and existing research into lymphoedema and its treatment. For our US counterparts this information can be substituted for the condition Lymphedema (lymphodma or lymphedma, lympedma). All information is maintained at the cutting edge by keeping up to date with essential, accurate and new reference material. It contains information on related conditions, how lymphoedema can be treated. Any suggestions about to treatment or content are welcome. Patients and interest groups including support groups find information helpful and are interested in similar resources and material aimed and intended specifically for medical authorities and the general medical profession. The sharing of content, ideas and information allows an exchange of treatment ideas and techniques that provide invaluable information that can be useful to you. We endeavour to share information with personal contact and provide a relevant information service to assist and help a worldwide community treating lymphoedema (lymphoedem). Although we are not a charity your donation for further research is appreciated as we know this condition can never be completely cured and requires ongoing research and development of pertinent strategies to prevent problems.

What is lymphoedema? Cancer treatment and lymphoedema

Lymphoedema is a swelling caused when drainage of lymph through the lymphatic system is compromised.

The result of compromised lymphatic drainage is retention of proteins in body tissue fluids. Interstitial fluid, lymph flow, infection education.

Retained proteins in body tissue fluid act like a magnet for other watery body fluids and lymphoedema swelling then occours. This is the common problem causing swelling for all lymphoedema. Lymph drainage to reduce swelling after cancer.

Lymphoedema cure. Compression of leg provides support therapy to help.

The cure for lymphoedema is to remove excess proteins away from the lymphoedema affected area so they return back into the blood circulation. Once this happens proteins are excreted by normal bodily function. Lymphoedema swelling then reduces.

This cure works to reduce all lymphoedema swelling, regardless of cause, whether secondary or primary lymphoedema.

Cancer and lymphoedema.

Cancer itself does not cause lymphoedema. The surgery and radiation therapy of cancer treatment, especially breast cancer surgery may be the trigger for lymphoedema. This happens when your lymphatic drainage system becomes compromised from surgical or radiation treatments. lymph node dissection.

It is the cancer treatment that affects the lymph flow of the lymphatic system that will cause lymphoedema swelling.

It is only when the lymphatic system becomes insufficient in function will lymphoedema occour. manual lymphatic drainage arm help

With care you can minimise your risk of getting lymphoedema swelling and requiring lymph drainage. mld help for chronic lymphatic therapy.

is caused by cancer treatment.
Secondary lymphoedema

Some people are born with a potential for slow lymph flow or reduced lymphatic function. It is not their fault and it causes swelling that requires lymph drainage treatment.

This condition is termed Primary Lymphoedema. It is often misdiagnosed as obesity. It affects many people.

If you have been diagnosed as overweight or obese where no diet works and there is no other rational diagnosis, then there is a fair possibility you could have primary lymphoedema.

Some swelling is lipoedema compression of the leg gives support

Some swelling that is mistaken for overweight or obesity is lipoedema. This is a condition where fats are stored in the body tissues and not re-metabolised when energy is required. Lipoedema therapy help.

Lipoedema is a bit like massive cellulite. In later stages it may look like lymphoedema. Lipoedema swelling starts at the ankles and finishes at the waist. It may also affect arms with swelling starting at the wrists and finishing at the top of the arms. Wear sleeves, avoid radiotherapy, fibrosis treatment.

In either case both legs and /or both arms are affected. Lipoedema always affects two identical limbs and sometimes all four limbs.
