The light frequency most used for laser in lymphoedema therapy ranges between 635 nanometers (nm) and up to 904 nanometers (nm). 

Laser light within the 904 nm spectrum is invisible to the naked eye. The 635nm light frequency is seen as visible red light. 

Laser is amplified light running in straight parallel lines. This laser light at certain frequencies has the potential to stimulate beneficial secondary photomediated cellular reactions and responses in the body to assist in the treatment of pain, swelling, inflammation and lymphoedema.

There are two types of laser used in the treatment of lymphoedema:  handheld lasers that reduce pain and swelling by improved circulation (blood and lymphatic) and scanning lasers which operate similarly. Many differing lasers have potential use for laser therapy.

Scanning lasers are most often used in hospitals. Handheld lasers are used in hospitals, clinics, and by patients themselves at home. The most common lasers used for lymphoedema therapy are handheld laser units.

The average time taken for lymphoedema treatment using an older style laser or a scanning laser is of one hour duration.
