About
laser therapy: lymphedema
The light frequency
most used for laser in lymphoedema therapy is 904 nanometers (nm). Light within this
spectrum is invisible to the naked eye.
Laser
is
amplified light running in parallel lines which at certain frequencies has the
potential to stimulate beneficial secondary reactions in the body.
Information
contained in clinical
trials by Dr. Neil Pillar in Adelaide, Australia have shown laser therapy can assist with lymphoedema control.
Laser
is not a magic cure.
lymphodma
For your information; From practical
experience and statistical information laser
therapy is best when used with other lymphatic drainage therapies. It is not a magic cure to control
lymphoedema.
What
laser has the potential to do. lymphedma
Laser will assist in
improving lymphatic flow and softening hard fibrotic tissues. This in turn
normally will help to reduce the associated swelling of lymphoedema.
The results of
laser therapy can be truly amazing. Some people respond quickly after just one 60 minute
session. With other people it may take many applications to have a similar
effect and provide the desired result.
Recorded
information and statistics indicate Laser treatment is ongoing. If no other therapy is
concurrently combined into a lymphoedema treatment regimen, then laser therapy is often
required every 2-3 weeks for a one hour session.
Given the requirement of
ongoing treatment it becomes cost effective to purchase a hand
held laser for self administration where the laser may be used at home.
Laser
therapy for treating lymphoedema works best when combined with Complex Physical
(lymphatic) Therapy (CPT). CPT consists of lymphatic drainage massage,
self massage, compression bandaging, compression garments, skin care and
eating the best choice foods to promote lymphatic health with dietary
considerations.

Types
of laser. limfadeema
There
are two types of laser used in the treatment of lymphoedema: handheld
lasers and scanning lasers.
Scanning lasers are most often used in hospitals. Handheld
lasers are used in hospitals, clinics, and by patients themselves at home. The
most common lasers used for lymphoedema therapy are handheld laser units.
The average time taken for lymphoedema treatment using
a handheld laser or a scanning laser is of one hour duration. Laser therapy is
applied in a selective pattern matched to each persons needs. By doing this the best lymphoedema therapy
treatment may be effected.
Laser
models and availability will vary from country to country. Development costs,
regulations, taxes, duties, equipment and delivery charges are subtly different
and impact on the final prices. lymphedeema

Summary
information:
What
is laser?
Laser is amplified light that runs in parallel lines. Laser light is capable of
penetrating body tissues.
How
does laser provide therapy?
When applied into body tissues laser light has the potential to stimulate
secondary beneficial responses at cellular level. These responses have been
proven to show positive results when applied to a lymphoedema affected area.
What
to expect?
Many people with lymphoedema have swollen limbs, hard fibrotic tissues and fluid
retention. Laser has the potential to assist with softening body tissues: improving lymphatic
flow and helping to reduce swelling.
Results may be immediate or be most
effective after many treatments. Each person will react differently to laser
therapy. Most people will positively react to laser therapy.
Who
uses it?
Any person with lymphoedema, lipoedema, cellulite, swollen limbs or joint pain
may use laser therapy.

Treating
Lymphoedema with Laser has been used as a supplementary
treatment for lymphoedema reduction in conjunction with Complex Physical (Lymphatic) Therapy
(Casley-Smith Method) which includes combinations of Massage,
Bandaging, Lymphoedema Compression Garments, Skin Care and Diet consideration
since the mid 1990's
in many Lymphoedema Treatment Clinics throughout Australia, with the first
Riancorp laser expressly purchased for laser lymphoedema treatment in 1993.
Since then other phototherapy units and lasers have come onto the market with
similar function.
Laser
lymphoedema treatments are also performed in many hospitals using a scanning laser
requiring a patient to disrobe and lie on a treatment table to have laser light applied
to the subject and surrounding body areas for periods of 30 mins or more. Home based Laser
Lymphoedema Treatment or Phototherapy treatment can be achieved with similar result to that of many
hospitals using a Hand Held Low Level Laser, Polarised light or Phototherapy
Unit from the privacy of a patients own home.
The Handheld LTU 904H Laser
Unit used in the sponsors lymphoedema clinic is a TGA Registered Class 1 Laser Product in Australia and the only laser device cleared by the FDA
in the USA specifically for the treatment of
lymphoedema. This laser and alternative lasers are available from the sponsor
Poppy Lane Skin Care & Lymphoedema Clinic and provide plenty of options to suit differing budgets. All laser units supplied are suitable for home use.
A
clinical "Randomised, Double Blind Trial using Laser for the treatment of
Lymphoedema" was performed by the Flinders Medical Centre in
South Australia. In this trial over 30% of patients achieved reduction of limb
volume of 200mls or better which is a significant result. Similar results have
been achievable at this clinic in arms and legs using lasers which are also suitable for use by patients themselves at home..
To
obtain best result with Lymphoedema and Laser Therapy, from clinical experience, the most effective
results are achieved when combined with CPT self massage, dietary
considerations, skin maintenance, compression garments and if required, a little
professional CPT massage.
